Maytag is recalling 2.3 million Maytag and Jenn-Air dishwashers due to a leaky rinse aid dispenser that drips rinse agent onto internal wiring causing potential short circuits and fires. The models affected are Maytag and Jenn-Air under-counter or portable plastic-tub dishwashers with black, white, almond, bisque, and stainless-steel front panels. Consumers should check the model number of their dishwasher and contact Maytag to determine if the dishwasher is included in this recall. Model and serial numbers are located on the dishwasher frame on the top or to the left of the door opening. The dishwashers were sold for $370 to $800 from July 1997 to June 2001 through various retail outlets and homebuilders. Consumers should stop operation of affected dishwashers immediately, disconnect the electrical supply, and contact Maytag for a free in-home repair. Do not take the dishwasher to your retailer. Customers are eligible for $75 rebate off the purchase of a new Maytag, Jenn-Air, KitchenAid, or Whirlpool model. For more information, contact Maytag at (800) 675-0535 or visit their repair website.
