With much of the country experiencing drought conditions, Florida has taken a lead by creating an advertising campaign and awareness program called “Think Two.” The goal is to water your lawn only when it needs it, which is generally twice a week. If you experience a heavy rainfall, it could be less. Plus, watering your grass too often leads to shallow root systems and promotes weed growth, disease, and fungus. Many municipalities have strict watering days and times, which can vary by house number, side of the street, or some variation of square roots and prime numbers, so be aware. Really, this approach is not only good for the grass, it’s good for the environment. When available use grey or reclaimed water for your irrigation—it is unrestricted and keeps water out of the filtration plants, putting it back into the environment where we most need it.
