On May 4th, 2007, Greensburg, Kansas, (pop. 1,500), was devastated by a category EF5 tornado that destroyed 95 percent of the town’s buildings. I remember hearing heartbreaking interviews with the town’s residents and their loss resonated with me. What do you do when everything you own and know is destroyed in one horrible day? Turns out this story has a promising, if not happy, ending. The Discovery Channel has teamed up with actor Leonardo DiCaprio to chronicle the town’s rebuilding in a series called “Eco-Town” which will launch the network’s new Planet Green channel. According to the press release, the town will be rebuilt as a “sustainable model of eco-living and one that will save it from future environmental catastrophe.” Planet Green is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2008. I’ll be tuning in.
