Here’s a guy who should be an inspiration to all DIY’ers out there. William Kamkwamba, a 19 year old high-school student in Malawi, Africa, built his own windmill equipped with only a book on electricity and some discarded building materials. Did I mention he dropped out of high school at the age of 14? Talk about a guy achieving against long odds. His windmill now powers the lights in three rooms of his family’s home and is also used to charge two radios and his neighbor’s mobile phones. As a result of his invention and the ensuing publicity, Kamkwamba has collected enough donations to continue his secondary school education. In collaboration with a friend, he also has a blog documenting the construction of the windmill and other ongoing projects.
