Fall is a strange time in the garden—some plants and produce have disappeared while others are growing like crazy. We’re still harvesting beans and lots of herbs at our house. There’s also an unidentified squash snaking its way across the lawn. The jack-and-the-beanstalk jokes are running wild, but I saved this photo to show the family what a really big squash looks like. It’s the great pumpkin, the world record holder on display at the Topsfield Fair in Topsfield, Mass. I find it fitting that America’s Oldest Agricultural Fair would have the world’s biggest pumpkin. Imagine how many pies you could make from that giant! Gardeners, take your cue from the fairs and field days that are wrapping up this month. Fall is for clearing out the garden, bolstering the soil, and dreaming of plants for next year. Hey, maybe you could give Joe Jutras and his 1,689-pound pumpkin a run for their money. You never know.
