The slowdown in the economy has led some Americans to start “insourcing” or, as we call it at BobVila.com, “do it yourself.” According to a recent article on MSNBC (that has since gone offline), sales of herbs, tomato and pepper seeds are surging at Wal-Mart as more Americans grow their own food. Others are canceling their lawn services to mow and tend their yards themselves. According to Paco Underhill, a noted retail consultant, “Americans have always taken some pride in doing things for themselves.” He predicts the trend will continue even after the recession is a “distant memory.” A trend for the better, in my opinion.
