Several solar panel customers are up in arms about a proposed fee by Xcel Energy in Colorado. The fee would be levied on homes newly outfitted with solar panels even if the home did not use any electricity in the month. A company spokesman said “the fee is a preventative measure to ensure that, down the road, solar customers do not get [a] free ride.” Free ride? Mike Jacoby, a solar panel owner in the area, offered this rebuttal, “[My solar panels] are generating enough to feed five or six houses around me electricity, so there’s no free ride.” A public hearing is set for August 5th.
