Today’s featured Charity is one committed to “helping community residents transform distressed neighborhoods into healthy and sustainable communities.” Since 1979, the Local Initiatives Support Corporation — a national charity — has been working to build sustainable communities across the country by expanding affordable housing, stimulating economic development, improving access to quality education and promoting healthy environments for community members.
LISC has numerous offices spread out over the US, identifying local priorities and working with community leaders to meet specific local needs and build a sustainable community.
What is a sustainable community? According to their definition, a sustainable community is a good place to live, to do business and to raise a family. Providing affordable housing is atop their list of ways they achieve this goal, which falls under the umbrella of “developing, preserving and investing in the physical environment.” As I see it, a charity like LISC is helping to keep America’s communities strong, vibrant and thriving. This is preservation of our very country.
