The Department of Energy recently announced a $5 million funding initiative to help develop plug and play photovoltaic systems that homeowners can purchase, install and make operational in one day.

The announcement is part of the Energy Department’s “SunShot Initiative,” a collaborative national effort to make solar energy cost competitive with other forms of energy by the end of the decade.

Part of a planned five-year program, the DOE will invest an initial $5 million this year for two projects that will develop innovative plug-and-play initiatives through partnerships with universities, industry, utilities and other stakeholders. There’s a plan in the works to request an additional $20 million over the next four years to support the efforts.

Plug and play solar energy systems will make the process of buying, installing and connecting solar energy systems far easier than it is today, which will encourage more homeowners to invest in the alternative energy source.

Would you be more likely to invest in solar if it was a plug-and-play solar system?
