Excellent video. I know that quite a few of us are interested in the tools you use, the manufacturer, the price and your appraisal of the product.
I would like to see a video on the tools you use in your shop
Tommy, Being a devotee of Norm Abram and his show, I was light on hand tools and how to use them properly. I have watched the plane video and learned a lot. Now I know why my hand me down plane from father in law didn’t seem to work right. It’s a number 4 and now that I know how all the parts work, I went through the steps you showed and miraculously the plane now works like it should. This is the content I am looking for and am willing to pay for. I like that you didn’t seem to gloss over any steps (although I wouldn’t have known). Many woodworking content I have seem to go from step 1 to step 4 and assume you will know how to get there. It was obvious to me what you trying to show and the examples shown on camera.
I would like to make 2 suggestions, could you add links to the equipment you use? I liked that you told us what plane you bought and how much it was, but I would have liked info on the DMT sharpening stones. I know some people would have their own equipment, but I had to do some research to find the stones you used. Even a link to the website where I could buy it would be helpful.
Secondly, there was one scene where you are trying to show us a center screw near the bottom of Plane, but the camera angle was not optimal and it was hidden by the plane handle.
All and all I thought the video was well produce and informative and I am looking forward to subscribing to your videos and stepping up my game. You can definitly count me in for the Step Stool video if that’s going to be your first one.
You said in one of your live video’s on Facebook that you are looking for feedback..So I will put my two cents in. I watch your live Facebook video’s because I’m encouraged when I see a big time woodworking guru make mistakes too. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t wish you to make mistakes, but it’s nice to know I’m not alone. Secondly, When you are on Facebook live you are just visiting and being real. That, above all else, is what will make this work for you. So, that said, I watched the video above on planes…. Your knowledge is without question, so focus more on just being you. One of the mistakes ALL these video guys make is they try to condense it and have efficient precises videos…Simply, they are trying to make a video the way they attack making furniture and it doesn’t really work. So my advice, DON”T RUSH the video content. You don’t have to be precise like you do when you are making a perfect dovetail. Just be real, and relax. Trust me, the woodworkers out there like me will not get bored and drop it… Honestly, if they do, they are not going to ever achieve the level of woodworking that you are trying to teach….I think you are on to something with your skill level teaching fine woodworking and starting with the How too video’s to get to your level…..I’m all in….
Excellent video, but would like more information on the DMT stones (part numbers) and on the wheel you use on your Grinder. I enjoy your teaching style. Have a Fun Day.
As good as it gets and I’ve seen them all. A beginner would be well served watching this video a few times.
Would like to see info about relationship of breaker and mouth opening for various tasks and wood types but understand that would be more appropriate in the use of the plane video.
Excellent video. Just like being there. Being super critical, the only thing I would like to have seen was a little better close up of the frog adjusting screw. Something a complete beginner might not understand. Outside of that, it hit all the points needed to be hit to make your plane cut like a champ.
Excellent video Tommy! I have about 10 planes old planes that need this kind of help. The little more close up on the frog adjusting screw would have been great. Got some work ahead of me now. Will this work on planes with heavy rust on them as well?
This was a great video T-Mac. You pointed me too it after watching you work the drawers on your new tool box. I actually have a lot of the stones and have had them for a few years but was never really shown the tricks of the trade and honestly probably get frustrated and quit on my tools way too early. Will go back now and do it right. Thanks a bunch. And can I say keep shaving. Wish I was closer to you than half the continent away.
Wow what a great video I’ve been working on wood for almost 40 years I’ve seen many people too many things with hand planes from Lee Nielsen to the experts ascent Stanley I’ve gone to which shows in Saratoga Springs New York all way to Florida I even met you at the Springfield mass woodworking show a few years back never get to see any of you work until today so thank you for all the tips and good advice, plane ,practical and it works …
Hello Tommy,
I hope that you don’t mind if I refer to you as just Tommy instead of Mr. MacDonald. It has been awhile since I have been able to watch one of your videos. I am watching one now where you talking about hand planes. It occurred to me that I did not recognize the background. Is that the same shop that you built on your property? I do hope that it is. Would you give us all a tour of your present day shop?
Great lesson. Thanks Tommy.
