Storm Safety

If a tropical storm or hurricane warning is issued, take the following precautions: Shutter or board up all windows; bring in all outdoor furniture and objects that might become wind-borne and endanger neighboring property; secure any sliding windows or doors with by bracing the tracks to prevent uplift; anchor any boats or mobile homes to reduce the possibility of movement during the storm; prepare for power outages by closing off unused rooms, conserving heat, and powering down computer systems.

Generator Test

Be sure to test your back up generator every year, especially prior to the cold seasons when it is imperative it work. Also check the oil level, spark plug and fuel filter as prescribed by the owner’s manual.

Prepare for a Winter Storm

Prepare to survive on your own for at least three days. Assemble a disaster supply kit. Be sure to include winter specific items including rock salt to melt ice on walkways, sand to improve traction, and snow shovels. Keep a stock of non-perishable food and extra drinking water.

Prepare for isolation in your home. Maintain several days supply of medicine, water, and food that needs no refrigeration. Have sufficient heating fuel, regular fuel sources may be cut off. Have emergency heating equipment and fuel (a gas fireplace or wood burning stove or fireplace) so you can keep at least one room in your home liveable. Be sure the room is well ventilated. If a thermostat controls your furnace and your electricity is cut off by a storm, you will need emergency heat.

After a Winter Storm

Identify possible damage, such as broken pipes and downed tree branches or power lines. Report damage to utility company and avoid the area to prevent personal injury. To repair roof damage, call or consult a licensed roofing contractor. Never try to thaw a frozen pipe with an open flame or torch. Shut off the water and call a licensed plumber. Carefully assess snow or ice accumulations around the home. Clear walkways and sidewalks to prevent injury, but use caution to avoid overexertion. Close exterior water spigots.
