Pilgrim Blanket Chest
Pilgrim Blanket Chest
This quartersawn white oak blanket chest is reminiscent of chests made by the Pilgrims in the 1600s. The relief carvings on the front panels make this piece a real standout. Surprisingly, as Tommy demonstrates, the carving work is far less difficult to execute than it would appear to be. The chest’s construction is basic frame and panel assembly. The beading and chamfers were cut on a router table.
Beautiful chest. Where can one go to get the pattern you used for the relief carving? I have never attempted the carving but after watching your show I would like to give it a go.
oh wow i love this blanket chest, and how would i be able to get the whole pattern to make the chest for myself? i have seen your show a few times on pbs and i love it.. i have been watching you build your new shop, and putting it all together.. it looks like it could be fun, in a very good way..
Nice panel design. For people wanting patterns of any thing, copy & print the photo. Draw a grid of lines on it. For the full size, draw a grid with the same # of lines but at a scale to cover your desired size. Then within each square eyeball the required shape. By doing it in small areas proportions are maintained. To transfer to the work piece use a spiked wheel tool made for the purpose, available commercially. Tape the perforated pattern to the work and use a bag of charcoal or most any fine powder. Then pencil the line to preserve them. You can use the pattern as many times as needed.
