Another dishwasher recall has been announced—this one from GE and affecting 2.5 million built-in dishwashers manufactured from September 1997 to December 2001. Apparently the problem lies with the rinse agents that have become so popular. According to GE, the use of these agents over time causes a disintegration of the insulation on the wiring inside the door. This can cause a a short and, in turn, a fire. GE has received received 135 reports of overheated wiring, 56 reports of property damage, and 12 reports of fires that spread beyond the dishwasher. This recall affects the following brands: Eterna, GE, GE Profile™, GE Monogram®, Hotpoint®, and Sears-Kenmore. Customers are urged to contact the GE Recall Hotline if they have or suspect they have one of the affected dishwashers. The recall hotline number is: 1-877-607-6395 and is staffed Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. EDT. Customers should have the model number and serial number of the dishwasher when they call. The tag with this information will be located either on the inside right or left side of the dishwasher or on the right-side edge of the door.
