Vu1 Corporation just announced that on March 23, 2011 it will begin shipping its mercury-free, energy efficient Electron Stimulated Luminescence (ESL) R30 light bulb.

And ESL bulb uses accelerated electrons to stimulate phosphor in the bulb to create light. Vu1’s ESL R30 has a lifespan of 10,000 hours and fits in all US recessed car lighting fixtures. According to the manufacturer, the ESL bulbs light is “virtually indistinguishable” from traditional incandescent light bulbs. What is distinguishable? A higher price. The bulbs will sell for about $20, which is about half the price of the lower-priced LEDs on the market.

BUT, the bulbs are fully dimmable and non-toxic and their long life alone should make them an attractive purchase. That and the fact that everyone knows what CFL means so it no longer impresses. But ESL? You’d be the talk of the block.

Check out the technology on the Vu1 site to see if you’d buy one.
