In preparation for the pool-friendly spring and summer days, The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently issued a warning to pool owners concerning the risks of drowning and related accidents. We thought it fit to pass this warning along to our readers. Deaths involving inflatable pools was up from 9 in 2004 to 17 in 2005, and total 2005 drowning deaths of children under 5 was at around 280—about 2,100 emergency room treatments of pool submersion injuries were reported that year as well. Homeowners with pools should check out the official CPSC issuance and take all the advised safety precautions. Smaller inflatable pools are often exempt from local codes that require barriers, but this is no excuse. Taking all the right steps will ensure a fun and safe summer in the sun.
