Last weekend we got our first real shot of cold air here in New England. The leaves are starting to change and thoughts are turning to thermostats. With wild energy prices looming, everyone is looking to increase efficiency. And yet, nearly two-thirds of us overlook the obvious: Sealing the house against the cold. GE did a quick online survey last year to gauge just how committed people were to saving energy. Those who do seal their homes typically seal the windows, doors, and plumbing access. A full third of those sealing their homes are covering the heating and air ducts and vents. Why don’t the other folks seal up to beat the cold? Most responded that they don’t know how. EnergyStar has a great section on their site dedicated to home sealing. Check it out and get ready to beat back the cold.
