If you have a negative view of teenagers, one 16-year-old high school student may just change your mind. Given the assignment to complete a “personal project on a non-academic topic,” he chose to build a wooden bicycle. Although the bicycle itself is impressive, the way he chose the idea was particularly touching. He says he always had an interest in woodworking and design, which helped shape his idea. “This project came to mind as I was reflecting on the many stories my opa, Case Vandersluis, told me about his adventures in Holland during World War II,” he says. “Opa was roughly the age I am now when he had to build wooden wheels for his bicycle, as rubber was scarce during the war.” Read the full story on the Lee Valley web site.
